NY Times - BEIJING, Dec. 10 - When construction on the 610-foot-high, 1.4-mile-wide Three Gorges Dam was finished in September, it was heralded as an unparalleled engineering feat. Flung brazenly across the mighty Yangtze River in China, it is the largest concrete structure in the world, five times the size of Hoover Dam.
