With the world-famous Dunhuang as the background, this drama portrays a young painter called Mo Gao, who pursues the best art and a girl called Yue Ya, who breaks through the feudal yoke to pursue her true love. Crazy about the mural paintings in Dunhuang Caves, Mo Gao is critically ill while traveling across the desert but fortunately rescued by Yue Ya. They fall in love with each other but are opposed by Yue Ya's father. Under threats of blood and fire, Yue Ya gives up her life for human equality and true love, while Mo Gao with great sorrow finishes his artistic and poetic masterpiece.
