Today I Will Fly!:

In Today I Will Fly!, Piggie comes along and announces she will fly today.  Gerald immediately tells her that impossible, and perhaps she ought to have her head examined.  The story moves along with Piggie trying to fly and Gerald wondering when his little friend will smarten up.  The story wraps up with a sweet, suprising resolution that includes compromise on behalf of both of these appealing characters.

Elephants Cannot Dance!:

Gerald, who is convinced that he cannot (he tells Piggie to look it up in the "What Elephants Can Do" book) decides to give it a go nonetheless. Willems's characteristically sparse cartoon images and the use of speech balloons portray the comical dilemma with clarity, making it an ideal pick for early readers.

Realizing that their trademark blank background is, in fact, a page, the duo has a blast convincing the reader to say funny things out loud—until Piggie mentions that the book will soon end. Cue Elephant’s existential crisis: “WHEN WILL THE BOOK END!?!” From there on, it’s a cute—but never too heady—play on the physical object that the reader is holding, including a bit where Piggie appears to flip the pages forward to get a sense of how much time they have left. Willems’ satisfying (if self-serving) solution? Read it again!

Should I Share My Ice Cream?:

By the time he decides in favor of sharing, it has melted into a puddle at his feet, and Gerald realizes that he "blew it." But timing is everything, and Piggie shows up at that moment with a cone of her own and happily shares it. "Not my plan," thinks Gerald, but he also realizes that this arrangement is fine.
