This proverb reminds us that, in any confrontation between two parties, one side will always ends up the loser.  Thus, it is best to try to avoid conflict as much as possible  so that no one loses face (or anything else)! While you are bound to win sometimes, you are equally bound to lose. It is best to simply find a common ground.
