The Great Masque is from the novella and short-story part of the 21st Century Chinese Literature series, focusing on life in the city. It has 14 pieces of stories selected from alternative ones. The many authors of these stories are famous writers in China's contemporary literary circles, including Tie Ning, Wang Anyi, Dai Lai and Chen Xiwo. Their works have won many literary prizes. For instance, Xu Yigua won the greatest potential prize of Chinese Literature Award in 2003, and Zhang Chu's Paperclips was awarded the Top Novella Prize by People's Literature.
