《四五快读故事集》以《四五快读》前六册的552个汉字为基础，编成50个小故事。前8个故事没有加任何新汉字，从第9课起，就逐渐加入新汉字，以便让小朋友再逐渐积累汉字，提高阅读水平。《四五快读事集》共加人新汉字273个，读完《四五快读事集》，加上前七册学会的552个汉字，共会认识825个汉字。为了区分新字，《四五快读事集》中的新汉字都印成红颜色，在每个故事后，把新汉字提出来，并注上拼音。
