The Biggest Bear by Lynd Ward is about a little boy who lives next to the woods. When he goes to town he notices all the farmers have a bear skin drying on the side of their barns. He is disappointed his family does not have a bear skin on their barn. He goes into the woods with his gun hunting for bear. He finds a bear it is a cub. He brings the bear home. Soon the bear gets into the other farms fields, smoke houses etc. The farmer s are angry and tell Johnny that he must get rid of his bear. He takes the bear back to the woods but the bear always comes back. Finally Johnny knows he must take the bear into the woods and kill it. Just as he is about to shot the bear he takes off Johnny with him. They end up in a bear trap. When the men come to see what they have caught they are surprised to find Johnny in the trap with the bear. The men are there to trap a bear for the zoo. Johnny is so pleased that his bear will be safe and live happily at the zoo. This is a good read with very realistic pictures done in a sepia tone.
