　1899年的德州夏天，白天氣溫高得嚇人，一般人即使安安靜靜躺下來睡午覺，依然汗流浹背。11歲的卡莉喜歡在這時候一個人偷偷跑去游泳。她對報社刊登太陽下的氣溫不滿意，寫信去反應，報社從善如流，改報陰影下的氣溫，果然讓人覺得涼爽了一點。大哥送她一本筆記，她用來觀察紀錄每天看到的生物，也聰明的想出號令蚯蚓的方法，銷售給哥哥當魚餌。她對對達爾文的進化論感興趣，偷偷設法去圖書館借書，卻被禁止，讓她很沮喪。後來她發現庭院裡的綠色蝗蟲體型比較小，動作迅速；黃色蝗蟲雖然動作慢，個頭卻大，她跑去問爺爺，以為自己發現了新品種，但爺爺要她自己找答案。她從觀察中體認到黃色蝗蟲因為有體色保護，所以即使動作遲緩，仍然可以活到比較老。她把這個發現告訴爺爺，老人家大為驚訝，將她視為志同道合的朋友。爺爺引領她進入科學世界，教她如何做觀察筆記，如何使用顯微鏡，同時怎樣養成實事求是的研究精神，並告訴她許多科學家的事蹟。

　　卡莉的志向是進入大學就讀，當一名博物學家，但媽媽觀念非常傳統，期待她當個淑女，逼她學習縫紉、編織、烹飪和彈琴。她無力反抗，在媽媽的期待和自己的興趣中掙扎。

　　暑假期間她和爺爺發現一種巢菜，他們加以培育、觀察、照相，寄到博物館申請承認發現新物種，聖誕節過後，他們終於收到回信，並得到以家族姓氏命名的榮耀，也為卡莉爭取到不同發展的機會。
